About the project
At Altus Safety, we have gained an expert reputation across England, Scotland, and Wales for providing tailored fall protection, roof access and abseiling equipment to an array of well-known names.
One of the latest projects that we have completed was with a company that manufactures timber engineering software, metal webs, and nail plates.
What Was Required?
The company in question are known as Wolf System, who are based in Coventry. The goal of this project was to install a safe and secure roof access system so that the gutters could be maintained, proper roof inspections could be performed, and also provided a way to maintain the skylights.
Were There Any Design Constraints?
As with all projects, there were a couple of restrictions that we had to face when designing and implementing the perfect tailored solution for Wolf Systems.
One of the things that needed to be taken into account during the design phase was that a collective measure was preferred as opposed to a fall restraint or a fall arrest system, which meant that their own maintenance team would be able to access the roof with minimal risk and training. In addition to this due to it being a metal sheet roof, a standard freestanding system would not be suitable
What Were The Challenges?
Some of the challenges that we had to face during the project included the fact that firstly, and as always, it needed to be a safe installation. It also needed to cause minimal disruption to day to day business
What Was Our Final Solution?
Altus Safety considered all the options that were available and proposed a fixed guardrail system. This consisted of a galvanised steel guardrail that was secured with self-sealing rivets, ensuring a watertight seal could be produced, eliminating any water ingress.
To ensure that the installation was carried out safely, we performed a full site survey to ensure the installation could be completed to the highest safety standards with our operatives using mobile man anchors in restraint during the installation.
The system was designed and fabricated with angle base plates to allow for the pitch of the roof, and also ensured that the guardrail was level and 1,100mm high in all areas.
To make sure that there were no disruptions to everyday business, the client coordinated with us and we developed a suitable safe method of works.
The Overall Outcome
The customer was really pleased with the service we provided, and we couldn’t have been more proud of everyone that worked on the project.
The job itself was completed over two days, which included the installation of 95m of fixed guardrail to the roof edges and around the skylights. Above all else, a safe and collective system was installed to ensure the safety of the company’s own maintenance team for years to come.
