About the project
Horizon Farnborough is a new retail development in Farnborough that is being designed and built to occupy a large shopping space with a wide range of stores. This is a £15.9 million joint venture between Catalyst Capital and real estate asset management firm Steamrock Capital; this project started in January 2017 and is set to be completed by January 2018.
Right now, the existing buildings have been demolished, and the two warehouse buildings that will be built will then be subdivided into five retail units. There will be over 112,000 square feet of A1 consented retail warehouse accommodation.
Combined with the 86,200 square feet of Solarton Retail Park, the location will become the dominant House & Home Retail Warehousing Cluster in its catchment.
Current occupiers of the property include DFS, Furniture Village, Betta Living and ScS.
We were contacted to design, supply & install permanent roof access & fall protection equipment so that once completed maintenance operatives were capable of working there without safety fears. There are several gutters surrounding the perimeter of the roof, as well as many roof lights and roof-mounted plant equipment, meaning workers needed to constantly maintain and upkeep them.
This work at height can become dangerous, which is why it’s important to ensure all health and safety guidelines are being followed. In this case, because operatives will have to access the roof area for inspection and maintenance, Work at Height Regulations (WAHR) say that competent and trained workers must use suitable fall protection equipment.
So, we installed fixed edge protection behind signage to prevent falls by maintenance operatives, gutter protection preventing damage to the gutter lining, and fall protection equipment that allowed access from gutters up to various roof-mounted plant rooms as well as safe access to skylights for future maintenance.
But how did we do this exactly? When Altus Safety worked on this project, we made sure that safety features were firmly in place to help workers in their daily tasks. These safety measures included the installation of a 600mm wide rooftop UPVC walkway that provided access to X4 roof-mounted plant rooms. The anti-slip surface not only provides a safe means of access for operatives frequently accessing the plant rooms for maintenance, but also works as a form of protection for the Kingspan KS1000 Roof sheet.
As the perimeter gutters were the primary access route for operatives (because they frequently access the roof), we installed a 600mm wide PVC loose laid walkway to rest in the gutter in order to prevent the gutter lining from becoming damaged. As with the UPVC walkway, the PVC walkway provides an anti-slip surface.
We also installed collective edge protection fixed to the steelwork beneath the parapet capping, protecting operatives from falling where the parapet level drops to below 1100mm (to allow for signage).
The roofs in question were fitted with a Kingspan KS100RW roof sheet, so with Altus Safety being approved installers of the Kingspan Safepro2 system, we recommended using this, which would allow our client to maintain their all-in-one Kingspan guarantee.
