Background
Brompton Cemetery was built in the 1830s as one of London’s Magnificent Seven garden cemeteries that circle the capital in a bid to combat overcrowding in the Capital’s graveyards.
It is listed as a Site of Nature Conservation and is the only cemetery in the country owned by the Crown. The cemetery houses approximately 35,000 gravestones, catacombs, stoned arcades and a chapel, and is one of the city’s most popular green spaces, featuring a wealth of wildlife and trees. Famous names buried there include Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst.
A multi-million pound conservation project is underway to conserve the historic landscape, redevelop certain sections and improve access to various parts of the cemetery.
Requirement
The upkeep and maintenance of the cemetery is of vital importance to its future as one of London’s most popular green spaces.
The client needed a solution that allowed maintenance staff to safely access roof areas to carry out regular cleaning and maintenance. However, the aesthetics of the buildings and structures within the cemetery are essential to its uniqueness, heritage and popularity, and therefore any solution could not visually impact the building.
Solution
Personable relationships and clear communication are everything on projects of this nature. Our estimating team worked closely with the client from day one to design a solution that, following the necessary training, was easy for maintenance teams to use, but that also didn’t detract from the cemetery’s stunning architecture and design.
We decided that the Soter safety line system was the most appropriate for the job. We supplied, installed, tested and certified X8 Soter fall restraint systems, resin anchored through the membrane and insulation to the concrete substrate beneath.
The solution comprised of X73 posts and approximately 390lm of stainless steel cable fitted to the colonnades and the chapel. The roofing contractor would then follow behind to weather our posts once they were fixed in position. This was all installed with utmost care and respect for the structure, ensuring the beautiful ornate architecture was not affected in any way.
The client also opted for our 3 year maintenance agreement, ensuring a complete end-to-end solution and one that will help ensure this historic site remains effectively cleaned and maintained for years to come.
